Grainger mats: using MRO spec filters well, and when to look beyond them

An independent, fair look at where Grainger fits in North American matting, and how to compare it properly. Ergo Matting is not a single-brand catalog, we run no paid rankings, no affiliate links, and no unfair takedowns, just strengths-first, buyer-focused comparisons.

In short

Grainger (Lake Forest, Illinois) offers the best spec-level filtering among the big MRO distributors, thickness from 3/8" to 1", material, brand, plus KnowHow guides; use the filters to shortlist across manufacturers, then pull full datasheets for finalists and compare volume pricing against buying direct.

About Grainger

Grainger is the archetypal MRO distributor: a national branch network, deep account/approval infrastructure, and a matting catalog that spans many manufacturers. Its differentiators for mat buyers are practical, spec filters that let you slice the catalog by thickness (3/8" to 1"), material and duty, and KnowHow editorial guides that explain selection in plain language.

The same distributor caveats apply as anywhere: listings compress datasheets, near-duplicate SKUs can sit at different price points, and sustainability information is usually thin. Filter to a shortlist, then compare the exact SKUs on their full manufacturer datasheets. Our supplier comparison guide covers the full process.

Who is Grainger best for?

  • Facilities already running procurement through Grainger accounts and approval workflows
  • Buyers who want to compare many manufacturers by spec in a single catalog
  • MRO teams that value branch availability and account support over lowest unit price

What to check before choosing

The same diligence applies to every brand on your shortlist, including this one:

  1. 1Confirm the underlying manufacturer and request its full datasheet
  2. 2Watch for near-duplicate SKUs at different price points — compare material and thickness exactly
  3. 3Ask about volume pricing versus buying direct from the manufacturer

FAQ

Grainger: common questions

Honest answers to what buyers actually search for.

What thickness of anti-fatigue mat should I filter for on Grainger?

As a starting point: 3/8" to 1/2" for precise work and areas with carts or rolling chairs; 5/8" to 3/4" for stationary standing; up to 1" only for heavy industrial duty where nothing rolls across the mat. Thicker is not automatically better — overly soft mats increase fatigue and trip risk per CCOHS.

Is buying mats through Grainger more expensive than direct?

Sometimes, particularly at volume — distribution convenience has a cost. For a handful of mats the account convenience usually wins; for multi-station rollouts, get a manufacturer-direct quote for the same SKUs and compare. Grainger volume pricing is also negotiable on larger orders.

What are alternatives to buying mats from Grainger?

Other distributors (Uline, Global Industrial, MSC Industrial Supply) offer similar multi-brand catalogs with different strengths — Uline for stocked speed, MSC for technical machining focus. Manufacturer-direct (Wearwell, NoTrax, M+A, Ergomat) wins on spec depth and custom sizing. The right route depends on volume and how demanding your environment is.
